After just losing a son of his own, Anderson is forced to explain the unexplainable, as horrifying evidence stacks up to peg local townie and Little League coach, Terry Maitland. Though insistent on his innocence, Maitland experiences animosity from his neighbors as the investigation continues, employing two common genres of Stephen King, horror mixed with a bit of police procedural. Needless to say, we’re curious as to which devilish apparition, grueling specter or demonic being gravely gets the black heart pumping? How about we name a few of our personal favorites?

Pennywise

This monstrosity is unforgiving when you’re in close quarters. After all, Pennywise is a shape-shifting demon that has the power and inexorable ability to change into whatever its victim fears the most. While he usually takes the form of a frightening, dancing clown, this cosmic entity is a vindictive monster that will stop at nothing until he feeds on the flesh of his favorite food, children.

Pinhead

Hellraiser fans rejoice! Your grueling monster, leader of the Cenobites, is one of the most underrated, fang-tastic creatures in the horror genre. Not only is the Hell Priest, Pinhead, not shy at the sight of blood pooling, but this demonic entity also prides himself in his psychological torture abilities. And while he possesses a dangerous army of Cenobites behind him, this supernatural being is relentless when it comes to acting out fierce human killing sprees solo. Pinhead is undeviating, remorseless and will stop at nothing to have his prey in his sadist clutches. How’s that for an insanely grim movie monster?

Predators

Also known as the Yautja, predators are dangerous, extraterrestrial hunters that are vastly faster and more advanced in combat than many other horror monsters. Not only do these supernatural creatures share genetic human diversity (breath and look akin to humans) but they’re incredibly intelligent and use a variety of technology to camouflage and mutilate their prey. That being said, while the stereotypical monster in the genre usually attacks when provoked or threated, predators will seek out humans to claim as trophy kills.

What are the most common fears that inspire horror movies?

Posted on

While there are many notable horror movies that creatively craft their plot sequences from pure imagination, there are also those who take inspiration from the primal instincts of the human brain. Whether it’s an emotional reaction to pure darkness, built up tension leading to a striking moment of terror or a simple, unexpected jump scare, these elemental details are what keeps fans of the genre gripping their seats with fear and suspense. Since filmmakers feed on these emotional reactions to create a powerfully, spooky movies, you can pretty much guarantee that screenwriters and directors are known to recycle the same heightened phobias. Whether it’s a time-honored horror flick or a crummy addition to the dreadful genre, you can rest assured that the following horror hang-ups will continue to find their place into the chilling timeline of future films.

Fear of spiders (arachnophobia)

While arachnophobia can range anywhere from mild to severe depending on the person, psychologists believe that it is a fear that is instilled by the conditioning from a loved one. This means that most people who say that they’re fearful of spiders do not necessarily undergo an experience that instills “spider trauma”, but they have been told by a close friend or relative to be scared of creepy crawlies. So, it’s not the fear of being bitten, but rather the fear of their erratic movements and their abundance of legs and eyeballs that fuels this phobia fire. Needless to say, horror movies like Arachnophobia and The Exorcist have really taken the fear of spiders to a whole new level.

Fear of clowns (coulrophobia)

The concept of a creepy, evil clown is nothing new. In fact, horror movies like Stephen King’s IT and the Killjoy franchise have capitalized on it. While coulrophobia is more common in children, this intense fear is known to build up into adulthood. But why are so many people scared of clowns? Psychologists believe that this familiar fear is usually the result of a traumatic childhood experience and since humans rely on facial expressions to understand each other, the exaggerated, distorted, painted-on faces of clowns are something we become fixated and fearful of. Not to mention, clowns are mischievous, uncertain and in many cases portrayed as tricksters. It’s their appearance and unpredictability that makes you wallow is discomfort at the sight of them in horror movies.

Fear of puppets (pupaphobia)

Although pupaphobia is not as common as some other fears, there are still many people who’re scared of these uncanny hunks of wood and plastic. Although the fear of puppets is also generally developed through a case of childhood trauma, which makes it such a unique phobia is the fact that puppets are not real. Although they’re human-like and realistic in their appearance, the very notion of them moving or talking in any way has the ability to invoke suspicion and uneasiness in anyone. This is probably why Goosebumps’ Slappy and Saw’s Billy Puppet have become such wildly popular horror icons!

Gift ideas for Pennywise fans

Pennywise gifts

If only one character exemplified coulrophobia (fear of clowns), it’s Pennywise. Of all the personas this cosmic shape-shifting entity takes – Bob Gray, leper, werewolf, iconic Dracula, and Frankenstein’s Monster – the clown is undeniably creepy (and still beats the giant spider, which is next for inducing shivers)! Stephen King’s 1986 book IT gave way to an incredible horror story, with an unforgettable villain that Tim Curry chillingly portrayed in the 1990 TV mini-series and Bill Skarsgård etched into our minds in the 2017 theatrical blockbuster. For fans of the Dancing Clown, we have plenty of delightful Pennywise gifts to satisfy dark collectible hearts and to pacify us until 2019’s “IT: Chapter Two,” which will probably bring more fantastic memorabilia!

Revisit the first adaptation

Critics of the TV adaptation often cite slow pacing and lackluster special effects, but honestly, for a two-part small-screen miniseries based on a 1,000+ page book, it’s pretty damn good. It’s a who’s who of late 1980s’ names and genre fave Tim Curry, fabulous as “Rocky Horror’s” Dr. Frank-N-Furter and Legend’s “Darkness” outdoes himself. Tie a red balloon to this first version of IT, make up a popcorn and candy bowl, and watch this classic with your Pennywise geek.

Who doesn’t love dress-up?

Whether reserved for parties or at-home movie bingeing, why not give your beloved the ability to emulate their favorite killer clown? Curry’s and Skarsgård’s versions were distinctively different looking, but we have costumery for both! For those that favor Curry’s Pennywise with the retro outfit and fire-engine red hair, consider the men’s wig with attached headpiece, and the deluxe costume, available in sizes small to large. Or think about how cool it would be to combine the pennywise hoodie, with zip-up hood, available in adult x-small to x-large, with Rubies’ Pennywise make-up kit so your guy or girl can double the striking effects!

Skarsgård’s Pennywise was older looking, more in tune with the clown’s centuries-old history of terrorizing Derry. The Pennywise ¾ adult mask is latex artistry, detailed with synthetic tufted orange hair and the angular shape that mimics the actor’s face. In sizes standard to x-large, the cinematic grand heritage costume gives your geek the full length off-white suit, complete with ruffles and red accents!

Give them their own pennywise to play with!

Your intended will shriek in evil clownish glee when they unwrap their Pennywise gifts and see one or more of these awesome figurines! The 10” articulated living dead doll Pennywise comes with a red balloon (sic!) and looks exactly like the 1990 character, while Funko’s 8” SuperCute Plush indeed makes the 2017 interpretation amazingly adhorrible! Just as screamingly dark and cool are our selections of smaller versions, including POP!’s Stephen King’s 1990 replica and 2017 Pennywise with Boat, the VYNL 3 3/4” Georgie and Pennywise Set, and the novelty Dorbz’ TV Pennywise. As additional fun, periodically surprise your Pennywise lover with a POP! Movies: IT Bill, Stanley, Richie, Mike, Beverly, Eddie, and Ben, so they can play up their own scenes!

Which of these Pennywise gifts do you intend on purchasing for the IT fan in your life?
