What’s the story behind the villain, Jason Voorhees?
It may be hard for you to believe, but the famous Camp Crystal Lake killer actually has many layers that can be peeled back to find an awe-inspiring backstory. While most fans know that Jason Voorhees is a machete-wielding, counselor-slaughtering, hockey-masked zombie, at least this is what all Jason Voorhees horror collectibles convey, there are quite a few fun facts about the how his character, and the Friday the 13th franchise, work to establish an extensive history. So, why exactly is this villain so vengeful?
His mask covers his insecurities
While there are many mischief-makers in the genre that cover their devilish visage as part of their antihero identity, Jason Voorhees wears his illustrious hockey mask to cover up his severe facial deformities. And while fans applaud him for his undead abilities, the franchise reveals that it was because of this disfiguration that he was bullied, and eventually, drowned at Camp Crystal Lake. So, can you blame him for resurrecting from the dead to become a professional, supernatural serial killer?
But, why the hockey mask?
Although we would love to say that there was some in-depth, sentimental imagery behind the time-honored hockey mask, the reason that it became ingrained in Voorhees’ iconic look was simply that the director, Stever Miner, was obsessed with hockey. In fact, the critically-acclaimed hockey mask became so wildly popular that almost every Jason Voorhees horror collectible feature it.
He wasn’t the original killer
While many people believe that Jason Voorhees is just a bloodthirsty monster, with no moral compass or drive behind what he does, that simply isn’t the case. After Jason was drowned at Camp Crystal Lake, his mother, Pamela Voorhees, murdered all the camp counselors. Pamela blamed the lustful teens for her sons’ death because they were too focused on having sex, neglecting to see her son face down in the lake. I guess you could say that he is merely continuing the legacy that she left behind?
His body was never actually found
There are quite a few fandom predictions about what happened to Jason at Camp Crystal Lake — after his death, he became a demon demi-god with the spirit of Jason, he never died, but managed to live in a shelter in the woods or that he’s a rotting, fleshy zombie corpse whose only function is to murder all who he crosses. You get the gist of it. But, since his body was never found in the lake, almost any theory is humanly possible.
