Which recent horror production was scarier? Child’s Play or Annabelle Comes Home?

The ambiance of movie theatres across the country has been bursting with bloodcurdling terror as two new installments joined the dreaded library within the horror genre. The Child’s Play (June 21) remake and the most recent chapter in the Conjuring Universe, Annabelle Comes Home (June 26) brings a mix of suspense and laughs to believers in supernatural occult. Needless to say, while each film presents its own bizarre story about killer dolls plotting revenge, fans still grasp at the edge of their seats taking in the fresh, unpredictability of the genre. But the real question is, which chilling, cinematic flick is a more startling specter?

A review of Child’s Play

It has been over 30 years since the original Child’s Play film was released, so, horror scriptwriters have dipped their pens into the ink of nostalgia to create another iconic installment.

In our opinion, the modern-day retelling was partially an imitation, since it did cover the same main points of the novel feature — Andy Barclay receives a doll named Chucky as a present from his mom, the sinister toy becomes a problem and he goes on a murderous rampage — although how the story segues from A to B is what sets the two films apart.

What we found most shocking about the remake was that nothing supernatural actually occurred. In fact, the plot failed to follow the hair-raising tale of a cursed, voodoo-chanting serial killer and instead rewrote a story about a piece of artificial intelligence. Notably, the sociopathic murderer is far scarier than a robot going rogue. Nevertheless, the Buddi doll (not Good Guy doll) was the result of a mere upset factory worker neglecting to program the standard safety and non-violent features within the doll. It kind of takes away the aura of magic that the franchise casts. And while there were a few other notable changes, the most powerful one is represented through the obvious change in times. Today’s society is much more in tune to technology, allowing to play a role in how the retelling framed the Chucky doll as a technological robot that was designed to improve our lives. Although, in our opinion, it will not be easy for fans to miss the volatility and gory backstory that’s represented in the many alarming horror collectibles currently on the market. Easily put, a smarter, more advanced Chucky leads to a duller, less scary plot.

A review of Annabelle Comes Home

In only six years The Conjuring Universe has managed to carve their horror installments into chilling genre classics, although, Annabelle has been spotlighted as an eerie-sistable fan favorite. Based on a true story, the real Annabelle doll is kept inside the famous occult museum that was once run by paranormal researchers, Ed and Lorraine Warren. All the installments within the franchise fluidly depicted the real history of Annabelle.

The newest film, however, adds something very different to the mix of supernatural flicks. In fact, Annabelle Comes Home is a riveting addition and quite frankly, the scariest one yet. Embodying all the jump scares, creepy, signature effects and ghostly, drawn-out scenes are all elements that true horror lover’s dream of. After all, isn’t it enticing to watch a movie where around every corner, something goes bump in the night?

Situated in time after The Conjuring, the Annabelle doll is now sitting “safely” behind a locked glass door in the home of the Warrens. Of course, there’s a new, foolish character that decides that they’re brave enough to mess with supernatural forces. Upon entering the room that contains alluring items of the occult, the Annabelle doll is awakened to abrupt a stir of terror within the rooms of the home. Needless to say, you can really feel the grim fear that intensifies when multiple evil spirits begin to terrorize the young, impressionable characters. The best part is that the newest film provides a dim-witted relief trickled within the suspenseful story giving the flick some gentle humor.
