A road trip can be one of the most exciting elements of summer, but it’s easy for your vacation to take a horrific turn for the worst. That being said, some of the best flicks of the genre are about travel plans gone wrong, so before you set off on a fun getaway, consider watching the following three horror movies to ensure your killer vacay doesn’t turn into the “based upon a true story” inspired plot of the next blockbuster film!

The Evil Dead (1981)

Those who spend ample time out on the open road need a spot to lay their heads to rest and perhaps that includes a nightly stopover in a rustic log cabin in the woods? While most people enjoy spending their vacation time in complete remote seclusion, after rewatching The Evil Dead, a supernatural horror classic, they quickly remember what can happen among the thicket when demonic entities are lurking about within inaccessible territory. Needless to say, if you still choose to doze in a woodland shack, remember to leave creepy-looking books on their shelves at the risk of unleashing pure evil.

The Hills Have Eyes (1977 or 2006)

Even work-related road trips, such as testing radiation levels in the New Mexico desert, pose risk when you decide to take shortcuts that have been recommended by sketchy locals. That being said, even a huge crater filled with abandoned cars isn’t enough to fill your void of insanity when your camper van’s tire bursts with nothing around for miles. Mutant monsters or not, the pressing heat and lack of supplies can make anyone develop a taste for human flesh, and just like that, your entire vacation is ruined.

Since we don’t carry any specific The Hill Have Eyes hasn’t products, we recommend getting in the spirit by shopping for some mutant-inspired favorites.

Vacancy (2007)

Not every road trip requires you to rough it out. In fact, if you budget accordingly you may be able to enjoy a night or two of comfort in a snug mountain motel. However, if your nightly accommodation turns out to be a last-minute booking after some car trouble, before you commit to spending the night, make sure to check for any peepholes and test out your cell reception. Also, since you aren’t able to check the reviews, it’s usually a good idea to analyze the parking lot, as the lack of cars could mean that the manager in charge is a sick and twisted murderer.

Although the film Vacancy isn’t the most memorable genre addition, Psycho has inspired some of the grimmest keepsakes.
